You may ask what is the meaning of the word: stewardship? A steward is a manager of an estate or an organization. As you probably know good stewardship is one of the skills we should be teaching our children by our example. Help them see what you do with money right now, during their vital, never to be repeated growing up years.
It’s a fact; family disputes about money and how it is handled – spent or saved – can make everyone in the family, including the children…uneasy. Even Jeremiah noticed this and remarked: “The parents eat sour grapes, and their children’s teeth are put on edge.” (Jer. 31:29)
There are lots of reasons why money management is a necessary skill, not the least of which is this: a major cause of divorce is directly related to the stress put on a marriage by poor planning and management of money.
Therefore, as you can see – we have it in our power to give our children a better than 50/50 chance at a successful marriage simply by helping them become good stewards – managers, of all of their God-given talents and treasures, including money.
We may wonder how to begin to teach them. As always, the answer is by our example. Our children constantly watch us to see how we do things and they observe the way we handle money with great interest. When they see the importance we put on tithing and saving they will just naturally mimic what we are doing.
There are lots of books about Christian financial management and best of them you already own – your Bible – where you can read more than 800 places where God gives us instructions on how to be good stewards – money managers – for Him.
