...exchange, and it is good.  God created capital, that is, assets that produce continuing benefits, and it is good.  God created income, that is, the increase produced by capital, and it is good…provided it is used according to God’s priorities.  God owns everything in the world. “The silver is mine, and the gold is mine, declares the Lord Almighty” (Haggai 2:8).  “The land is mine you are but aliens and my tenants…throughout the country that you hold as a possession.”(Leviticus 25: 23-24).

God made me (all of us) His stewards and as you know, a steward is a manager of another’s property.  I have to admit, I’m still struggling to learn to be a good steward, that is, a good manager of the money God sends my way.  Today, my wife and I are better managers than we were a few years back when we were $13,000 in debt and the Lord showed us how to pay everybody in full over a period of many months.  My witness to you is that I now have a confidence in the Lord that I didn’t have before He showed me how to get out of and then stay out of debt.

Perhaps the lessons I’ve learned can help you, here they are:

(1) I must demonstrate obedience to God by giving Him 10% (tithe) right off the top of my gross income, before I pay any bills.

(2)  Next, I should save, that is – pay myself at least 10% of what’s left after the tithe is subtracted, “The wise man saves for the future, but the foolish man spends whatever he gets.” (Proverbs 21:20).  This is where I grow my capital.

(3)  I must pay my fixed expenses and a part of all old debts with what is left.  This is how I pay as I go and get out of debt.

(4)  I must learn to live below my income.  Did you know that 90% of all people, even millionaires, spend at least 10% more than they make each year?  It’s a fact.

(5) “Seek God’s guidance and help.” (James 1:5).

Prosperity can only be achieved when we become obedient stewards – managers—of the money that God entrusts to our care.  I want to be prosperous; therefore I will do my best, with both prayers and actions, to be obedient to God because I am His steward – how about you?
